“Why your CV shouldn’t be two pages”!

It’s that time of year again; CVs are being dusted off, polished up, and squeezed into two pages because “that’s what works best,” right?

Well, let me challenge that idea.

With over 25 years of experience recruiting mid to senior professionals, I’ve seen time and time again how the “two-page rule” can undersell your career journey. Some of the best CVs I’ve reviewed, and shared with clients, have been three or even four pages.

Here’s why:

  • Your career deserves to shine. Two pages often can’t capture the growth, pivotal roles, and achievements of seasoned professionals.
  • It’s about relevance, not length. If it takes three or four pages to present your roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments clearly and concisely, that’s okay! Just keep it focused and impactful.

My golden rules for CVs:

  • List your role (title).
  • Highlight your responsibilities (what you do).
  • Showcase your accomplishments (what you’ve achieved).

But don’t forget:

  • Prioritise your most recent roles and achievements. Accomplishments from years ago naturally fade in importance.
  • Keep it sharp; no waffling!

What do YOU think?
Has a longer CV ever helped you land an opportunity, or do you swear by the two-page format? Let me know; I’d love to hear your perspective!

Wishing you a successful 2025!
