This line stopped me in my tracks this week.
It came from an internal communication that referenced a piece on construction hiring. However, the lesson applies far beyond that sector.
In every industry, the story is the same:
Hire a great person.
Rush the onboarding.
Watch them struggle.
And write it off as a bad hire.
Some companies do get it right, and the difference is clear.
Structured onboarding. Proper support. Clear expectations. Ongoing feedback.
They treat Day One (and Week One, and Month One) as the start of success, not a test of survival.
But when it’s done badly?
The cost is enormous, in time, morale, lost productivity, and wasted spend.
And guess what, it’s entirely avoidable most of the time.
If you’ve invested in the right hire, make sure you back it up with the right start.
What’s one thing your company gets right when onboarding a new team member?
