The High Cost of a Bad Hire

“I made a bad hiring decision, and it came back to haunt me.”

That was a recent conversation with a business leader, challenging the adage that a company’s people are its greatest asset.

The employee in question was competent, but simply not ready for the role they were hired for.

What this highlights is that competency alone is not enough. If a person’s skills, strengths, motivations, and personality don’t align with the role, cracks will start to appear.

Shortcuts in the recruitment process, or taking the easy internal option can often lead to long-term repercussions.

Hiring the wrong person, promoting the wrong leader, or failing to realign teams can cost businesses dearly, in performance, culture, and retention.

So, what are you doing today to ensure your team is playing to its strengths? How do you make sure the right people are in the right seats?
