Everyone’s talking about Rory today, and rightly so!
What a night it was! What drama. It was fantastic to see Rory McIlroy finally claim his career Green Jacket and join the Grand Slam club of golfing greats.
But let’s be honest, for anyone watching, it was an absolute emotional roller coaster.
It looked like he was cruising to the Green Jacket with 6 holes to play.
And then, a couple of poor decisions opened the door for others to claw their way back in.
Then came the 18th hole in regulation.
Rory was in a good position, 125 yards out and he knew that three shots would get him that Green Jacket.
But it took four!
Not vintage Rory.
But that’s what pressure does. And in his case, the weight of history can’t be underestimated, as he chased that elusive Green Jacket and career Grand Slam.
Fast forward to the playoff:
Same hole. Similar position.
This time, just the two shots from 125 yards!
Calm. Clinical. Composed.
Masters Champion!
He learned, adjusted, and delivered.
Now imagine you are Rory’s manager…
He is a world-class talent. But even elite performers stumble.
The key is how they respond, and how they are supported through those moments.
In the workplace, we manage people with enormous potential. And like Rory, they won’t always get it right when the pressure. The question (and challenge) is:
How do we create environments where people can take risks and learn, or do we reward only perfection?
Managing top performers means:
- Allowing room for error without fear.
- Coaching in the tough moments, not just the wins.
- Building a culture where pressure becomes fuel, not a trap
- And helping people bounce back stronger, not shrink into doubt.
Great leadership isn’t about perfection, it’s about perspective.
Exceptional leaders give talented people the belief and the tools to regroup, refocus, and rise. That’s what sports psychologist Bob Rotella did with Rory after his round on Thursday!
So how do you support your high-potential team members when the pressure is on?
